LAWMA COMMENDS LAGOS REPORTERS’ VIDEO ON INDISCRIMINATE DUMPING, URGES MORE ACTIONABLE REPORTING
The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has commended Lagos Reporters for drawing public attention to an incident of indiscriminate waste dumping in Ibeju-Lekki, urging residents and media platforms to continue documenting and reporting environmental violations in ways that can support investigation and enforcement.
The LAWMA boss, who described the reporting of the incident as a commendable contribution to the collective effort to curb indiscriminate waste disposal in Lagos State, gave the commendation while reacting to a video shared by Lagos Reporters on social media, which showed some individuals dumping a large quantity of waste from a truck along a roadside in the Ibeju-Lekki area.
Gbadegesin, however, noted that the footage clearly captured the act of dumping but did not show the vehicle’s registration number or other identifying details that could help in tracking the perpetrators, urging media platforms and members of the public to capture such details, whenever it is safe to do so, when reporting environmental violations.
He explained that useful information could include the vehicle registration number, company name or logo, exact location, date and approximate time of the incident, as well as clear photographs or video footage, adding that members of the public should not put themselves at risk, confront suspected offenders or attempt to stop moving vehicles while obtaining such information.
He disclosed that LAWMA welcomed credible reports of environmental violations, regardless of the platform through which they were brought to its attention, provided they helped identify activities that undermine proper waste management and environmental sanitation in the State, saying, “We want to see more of this; we want Lagosians to keep their eyes open and continue to document and report indiscriminate dumping and other environmental violations, as the more useful details a report contains, the easier it becomes for the relevant authorities to act.”
Noting that the incident further reinforced the Authority’s position that the persistent appearance of waste on road medians was fundamentally a behavioural issue requiring the collective resolve of all well-meaning citizens to address, Gbadegesin urged residents to actively support efforts to keep public spaces clean and reject practices that encourage indiscriminate dumping.
He reiterated that achieving a cleaner Lagos was a shared responsibility requiring the active participation of government agencies, waste operators, businesses, communities and residents, while urging all stakeholders to play their part in promoting responsible waste management.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to following up on credible reports of environmental violations and taking appropriate action against individuals or organisations found culpable.
