The Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) has appointed Alhaji Dr. Umaru Muttalab CON as Chairman of the IHVN Board of Directors. He was appointed following the passing away of Former Board Chairman of the Institute, Professor Emeritus Umaru Shehu.
Dr. Muttalab, who has been a Board Director of the Institute since 2011, is a prominent business leader, banker, and chartered and certified accountant, with many years of experience in development, commercial, and merchant banking,
He is one of Nigeria’s most respected bankers, was the former Minister for Economic Development in 1975 and of Cooperatives and Supplies in 1976 and served as a member of Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council from 1975 to 1978. Alh. Muttallab was also a former chairman of First Bank of Nigeria and Jaiz Bank International Plc, as well as former Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer of the United Bank for Africa.
Dr. Mutallab holds the title of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), one of the highest honors in Nigeria. He is a graduate of South-West London College, Achimota College, Accra, and Barewa College, Zaria. He was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and Benue State University, Makurdi.
His extensive experience of serving on the Board of Directors of several companies such as Nigeria Agip Oil, Arewa Textile Limited, Nigerian Communications Commission, and other organizations is vital in leading the organization to provide quality health services, capacity building and research in Nigeria and West Africa.
Following a resolution of the Board, Sir Steve Bamidele Omojafor was also selected as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Institute. Sir Omojafor is the former Chairman of Zenith Bank, an accomplished marketing communication, advertising expert, and holder of the national award of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). His extensive knowledge of mass communication and social marketing is invaluable in the national response to mitigating HIV, TB, and other infectious and non-infectious diseases.
The Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) is a non-governmental organization established in 2004 to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in Nigeria by developing infrastructure for treatment, care, prevention, and support for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. IHVN has expanded its services to other infectious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, and non-infectious diseases, including cancers. As a local organization, the Institute is structured to collaboratively develop and maintain linkages within and outside the country that support the Government of Nigeria’s health sector strategic plans.
