PRESS RELEASE
As the first ever made in Nigeria furniture trade fair gets underway in Abuja, the Federal Government have been urged to empower indigenous furniture industrialists to help develop the local industry and reduce wastage of foreign exchange on importation.
Furniture Industrialist and fair organiser, Oyemike Onaham, who made the call in a chat with newsmen on Saturday at the eagle square venue, said that the need for empowerment was urgent to open the potentials of the multi-billion naira sector to the teeming youths for self employment.
“The present Federal Administration is a responsible and serious government, I therefore, appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to facilitate the empowerment of furniture industrialists by providing special support it of loans and possble grants to industrialists in the sector,” Onaham stated.
The Furniture Industrialist disclosed that many local and foreign companies engaged in the furniture production business in the country were making comfortable profits, adding that the sector “is almost still at virgin level with a huge potential for growth, employment and even exportation”.
Onaham noted that “Nigeria is one of the countries in the world blessed with amazing varieties of wood, including hard and water proof ones, which are suitable for production of dazzling and diverse furniture products for homes, offices, factories, vehicles etc”.
“Since no one can do without furniture, it is now necessary that government pay all necessary attention to the furniture industry,” he stated, adding that funds assistance and patronage by the Federal and State governments and corporate organisations would boost the furniture industry and made it attractive to youths.
“Once there is patronage by governments as a policy, it will be easy for corporate organisations to follow suit and thereby expand employment opportunities in the sector,” Onaham noted.
