The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, has observed that the INCITIS- FOOD Project has the capability to help improve national food security.
He spoke while receiving the Consortium Lead, Professor Gertrud Buchenrieder, and participants of the 2nd General Assembly of the INCITIS-Food Consortium on a courtesy visit to his office.
Professor Adebowale noted that the country has challenges in its agricultural systems and is unable to produce sufficient food for consumption.
He said collaboration with the INCITIS- FOOD Consortium would help integrate technology, and Nigeria would be able to provide cheaper food items for the population as well as export quality food items.
Professor Adebowale said the choice of UI as a partner in the project was not misplaced given that the university is the first and the best and the flagship of postgraduate studies in Nigeria.
The Consortium Lead, Professor Gertrud Buchenrieder, said the Consortium was being financed by the European Union.
She said the Project seeks to provide healthy and nutritious food from fish protein, fruits, and vegetables as well as insects.
She stated that in the latter part of the Project, small-scale farmers would be funded.
INCITIS-FOOD means Integrated and Circular Technologies for Sustainable City Region Food Systems in Africa. It is a four-year project that seeks to empower communities by opening up opportunities for them in agrifood supply and value chains.
