LAWMA DISENGAGES SWEEPERS OVER ILLEGAL DUMPING IN OWORONSHOKI

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has disengaged some street sweepers, their supervisors and the service provider, following investigations that established their involvement in indiscriminate waste dumping along the Oworonshoki-Beger axis of Lagos.
Speaking on the development at the weekend, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said that the action followed the Authority’s sustained investigation and surveillance of the median, identified as a recurring waste blackspot, and the confession of the sweepers to perpetrating the untoward act.
He said that the sweepers, their supervisors and the service provider were disengaged from the cleaning operation to underscore the Authority’s commitment to ensuring that all personnel and service providers engaged in waste management in the State upheld the standards expected of them and did not contribute to the environmental challenges they were engaged to address.
The LAWMA boss said that the Authority would continue to investigate recurring waste hotspots and take appropriate action against anyone found contributing to indiscriminate waste disposal, irrespective of their status or role in the waste management system.
He said, “Our responsibility is to keep Lagos clean, and everyone involved in that responsibility must play their part. Where our investigations establish that anyone is contributing to the problem, appropriate action will be taken. There will be no exceptions.”
In a related development, LAWMA enforcement team apprehended two suspected illegal waste dumpers, including Timileyin Ojo, a male load carrier, who allegedly used a wheelbarrow to dump waste on the road median around the Berger-Oworonshoki axis, as well as a suspected cart pusher for allegedly engaging in unauthorised waste collection within the same area.
The two suspects have been taken to the Oshodi Task Force Office (Mobile Court) for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with relevant environmental laws of Lagos State.
Gbadegesin urged residents, businesses and waste collectors to dispose of waste through approved channels and patronise only assigned Private Sector Participants (PSPs), while stressing that waste management personnel and service providers must uphold the same standards required of other stakeholders.
The Authority will sustain surveillance along the Berger-Oworonshoki axis and other identified waste hotspots, with further enforcement actions to be taken where investigations establish violations.
LAWMA also encourages residents to report cases of indiscriminate dumping and unauthorised waste collection through the appropriate channels and support ongoing efforts to achieve a cleaner Lagos.
